Five principles of our success
BIOSTEM Center has the richest experience in practical application of biotechnologies in CIS. We have reached our success following five main principles:
- Ultra-modern technologies
The leading international scientists, geneticists, biotechnologists, transplantologists and clinicians would consider it as honor to apply BIOSTEM equipment. According to our partners, particularly professor S.L.Kiselov (Laboratory Chief of Biology Institute of Russian Academy of Science) and Professor Colin Rainer (Birmingham Burn Center Chief, Great Britain), BIOSTEM is a unique Center in CIS and the Eastern Europe. That is not only about expensive modern equipment, which exceeds US $15 000 000 in price, and such world-famous brand names as ROCH, PERKIN ELMER, LABSYSTEM, OLYMPUS, LEICA, CARL ZEISS, SIMENS, PHILIPS, but also about the cooperation of biotechnological units of BIOSTEM, which are: Cell and Tissue Cultivation Laboratory, Basic Research Laboratory and Stem Cell Transplantation Laboratory with clinical branches of the Institute of Urgent and Recovery Surgery.
- High quality standards
The following statement of Hippocrates can express the main principle of BIOSTEM work: “First, do no harm!” That is why we are the organization where the highest quality standards are exercised. Owing to special design and unique equipment Cell and Tissue Cultivation Laboratory works in compliance with GMP standards and requirements. Any biological product cultivated in this laboratory receives the appropriate certificate, indicating qualitative and quantitative composition of cultivated cells and proves that these cells are not infected with hepatitis virus, HIV and bacteria that may cause dangerous diseases. Owing to the application of automatic bioanalyzers which exclude notorious “human element ” and reagents, received from the leading international companies, such as ROCHE, DRG, HUMAN, etc, Basic Research Laboratory represents corresponding level of quality. Sampling and following application of biological material are carried out in special “clean room facilities ” in order to protect a patient, especially one with compromised immunity, from “unexpected” infections.
- Proven clinical practice
All the surgeons have one golden rule: a new type of surgical procedure is concerned as successfully adopted one, if a number of such procedures exceeds a hundred. Speaking about clinical practice of the Institute of Urgent and Recovery Surgery n.a. Gusak of the Academy of Medical Science of Ukraine, it is worthy of mention that number of our patients satisfied with beneficial effect of modern cell and tissue technologies is more then a thousand people. Among these patients there were people bad burns covering more then 50% of body surface area. Many of them have came back to the normal life owing to the artificial skin cultivated in vitro. There were also children and adults with different types of tumor, as well as people suffering from immune deficiency. There was also a group of people with persistent non-healing wounds, fistulae, ulcers and disfiguring scars, the people with persistent nonunion of bone fractures, doomed to joyless life with crutches and wheelchairs some time ago, and many other people who used to be in despair but feel so happy now!
- International cooperation
At the present time, it is needless to say that modern medicine achievements are possible only under the conditions of close cooperation between laboratories of various countries. Such cooperation enables to broaden research aspects by dividing them into relatively small practicable segments. The perfect example of successful cooperation is a grand project Humane Genome, which involved more then one hundred laboratories worldwide. As a rule, cooperative study aimed to receive accurate results when solving one and the same problem. After that, received data are compared and averaged out.
The cooperation of the Institute of Urgent and Recovery Surgery n.a. Gusak of AMS of Ukraine (IURS) with Neurophysiology Institute of Cologne (Germany) is implemented under International Center of Stem Cell Research regulations.
Our collaboration refers to the following fields:
- Cloning aimed at receiving embryonic stem cell lines
- Elaboration of quality control system for drug testing
- Differentiation of stromal stem cells into endothelium cells, in order to induce growth of heart vessels in case of ischemic heart disease.

- Affordability
It is important to know that ICB BIOSTEM is a part of the Institute of Urgent and Recovery Surgery n.a. Gusak of the Academy of Medical Science of Ukraine, and therefore is not aimed at profit earning. This fact makes BIOSTEM different from the rest of biotechnology organizations. Our cooperation with the numerous funds and organizations supporting biotechnology development made it possible to reach one of the main BIOSTEM principles, which is affordability. It means that a part of medical care, that covers staff salary, public utilities and other current expenses are absolutely free of charge. Our patient partially refunds the expenses on consumables and medicines in accordance with the special Consumables Complex only. In a number of cases, as applied to orphan children, large families, physically challenged people and Great Patriotic War veterans, the medical care is absolutely free of charge. ICB BIOSTEM is the only leading organization to provide top-level medical care in Ukraine.
